This is great-grandma Elizabeth’s old-fashioned Red Velvet Cake recipe, a special dessert typically made during Christmas-time. It takes a little time but is well worth the effort.
Cake Directions:
1. Cream together shortening, sugar, and eggs.
2. Add sifted flour, alternatively, with buttermilk.
3. Make a paste with food coloring, cocoa powder, vanilla, and salt. Add to mixture.
4. Combine soda + vinegar, and add to the batter.
5. Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes. (Heavily spray cake pans so it comes out easier when assembling.)
Icing Directions:
1. In a saucepan, cook 5 tablespoons flour and 1 cup milk until smooth and thick. Let cool completely. (It needs to be thick)
2. With a mixer, cream together 1 cup butter and 1 cup sugar. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla and a dash of salt.
3. Add cooled flour and milk mixture to butter mixture. Beat together. Spread on completely cooled cake.
